High school students on Oahu learned about how local conflicts can evolve into global conflicts through the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies. “Learning about the issues our neighbors must deal with locally help us understand their perspectives, and they in turn can better understand ours”, said Ron Gonzales of ISLE, LLC.
Ron noted that many of the basic issues discussed on the field trip were ones that have been brought up across the world, and throughout history. ” Many of the basic issues that lead to conflict are often not new – they’re just framed in new settings. So there are probably already solutions, which both sides simply need to be willing to explore and adopt.”
The Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies offers training to regional leaders from several countries on how to manage and resolve conflict, and this year has included a student outreach component for the future leaders of our region.
